In 1904 the kidnapping of Ota Benga (A name given by his captor Samuel P Verner ) was taken from his homeland and placed into a dominant environment, embedded in science, history, government policies, and popular culture. In this monkey-house cage, Benga’s discomfort and humiliation was incomprehensible. During his life long exhibition, Benga become quite unmanageable - "the boy does quite as he pleases, and it is utterly impossible to control him"
